Welcome to the official website of the Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission!

This website provides information about the 2009/2010 Commission.

Alberta's electoral boundaries are reviewed in accordance with the Electoral Boundaries Commission Act. Alberta's population is 3,290,350 based on the 2006 federal census. It excludes the population on Indian Reserves not included in the census. Based on the current population, Alberta's 83 electoral divisions, on average, contain 37,820 persons. Actual distribution of the population reveals electoral division populations ranging from 23,649 to 60,511.

As directed by law, the Commission will make proposals to the Legislative Assembly describing the area, boundaries and names of 87 electoral divisions.

Most electoral divisions should be within +/- 25% of the average population. The Electoral Boundaries Commission Act allows up to four electoral divisions to exceed that range in cases where sparse population is spread over large areas. That flexibility is required so that the people in these large electoral divisions, like Dunvegan-Central Peace, have effective representation.

The Commission's recommendations may affect the boundaries, and maybe the name, of the electoral division where you live. You are encouraged to share your views on the Commission's proposals.

You can give advice and suggestions to the Commission by attending one of the public hearings, which will be held across the province in late September and October, or send your thoughts in writing. The Commission welcomes your input.

The Commission will present an Interim Report in February 2010, followed by a second round of hearings. A Final Report will follow by July, 2010. The new boundaries will be reviewed and may be revised by the Legislative Assembly. They will be used for the next general provincial election.

You are invited to participate in this important initiative that has been undertaken to ensure effective representation for all Albertans.
