The Electoral Boundaries Commission was appointed on July 31, 2009 and operates under the Electoral Boundaries Commission Act. The Electoral Boundaries Commission will review the existing electoral map of Alberta and make recommendations to the Legislative Assembly on the areas, boundaries and names for 87 electoral divisions (four more than at present) based on the latest census and population information. This review is done to ensure that Albertans have effective representation in the Legislative Assembly.
The Electoral Boundaries Commission has completed its first round of public hearings, held from mid-September to early October in 14 locations across Alberta. The Commission will now deliberate, reviewing all public input and the updated municipal census information that reflects the growth since the 2006 federal census.
The Commission will submit an interim report to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in February 2010 followed by a second round of public hearings to gather feedback from Albertans before finalizing the electoral boundaries and names. A final report will be submitted to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly by July, 2010.The new electoral map, once approved by the Legislative Assembly will be used for the next provincial election.
